Determination

The quiet engine that keeps a player pressing long after everyone else has stopped.

Determination

Determination is a mental attribute in Football Manager that measures a player's inner resolve to keep performing when the match is grinding, the legs are burning, and the crowd is pressing. On the familiar 1-to-20 scale shared by every rating in the game, it sits alongside Composure, Concentration, and Work Rate as one of the pillars of a player's psychological profile. Where Work Rate tells you how much effort a player is willing to give, and Concentration tells you how well they hold focus, Determination answers a different question: can this player still find a gear when the 85th minute hits and the scoreline is against them?

In practice, high-Determination players are the ones who track back for the fifteenth time, who win the header they should have lost, who keep pressing the last defender when everyone else has switched off. Managers who scout for grit, resilience, and that refusal to accept defeat will find this attribute doing a lot of quiet, essential work in the background of every match simulation.

Lore & Background

In the sprawling, data-drenched world of Football Manager, Determination occupies a peculiar niche. It is not the flashiest rating a scout will circle in red ink. It does not produce the viral highlight-reel moments that Composure or Flair might. Yet every manager who has ever watched a 1-0 lead evaporate in the final ten minutes, or who has seen a 17-year-old academy product track a full-back for the entire second half while the veterans around him are gassed, has felt the invisible hand of this attribute at work.

The game's match engine treats Determination as a modifier that resists the natural decay of performance as a match progresses. A player with a 16 in Determination and a 14 in Fitness will still be making decisions, closing down space, and winning duels in the 88th minute in a way that a 9-Determination peer simply cannot. It also softens the blow of adverse match events: a goal conceded, a red card, a hostile away crowd. The player does not fold. They dig in. They find the next tackle, the next pass, the next run.

Fans of the series often joke that Determination is the attribute that separates a squad that 'fights' from one that merely 'plays.' It is the numerical expression of that old footballing cliché about heart, and in a game built entirely on numbers, it is one of the most emotionally resonant ratings a manager can see on a player's profile.

In Their Own Story

The away end was a wall of noise, the kind that vibrates in your sternum. Sixty-three minutes in, the score was 1-1, and the centre-back's legs were turning to wet sand. The ball was punted high into the box, a lazy, hopeful thing. Around him, three teammates were already drifting, hands on hips, watching the trajectory. He was not. He read the arc, adjusted his run by half a step, and met the ball with a header that was less technique and more sheer refusal to let it drop. The keeper parried. The ball fell to his feet. He did not celebrate. He did not even breathe. He turned, found the winger on the overlap, and played a simple through ball that split the last line. The net rippled. The away end went silent. He jogged back to his position, chest heaving, and waited for the restart. In the manager's office, far away, a scout was writing in a notebook: 'Determination: 17. Non-negotiable.'

Reader's Guide

Mechanically, Determination acts as a performance-retention modifier in the match engine. As a game progresses and players naturally lose sharpness, the rate of that decline is tempered by the player's Determination rating. A 19-Determination full-back will still be tracking the winger in the 89th minute; a 7-Determination one may already be standing in his own box, out of breath.

It interacts closely with Fitness and Work Rate. High Work Rate without Determination gives you a player who starts fast but fades. High Determination without Fitness gives you a player who wants to keep going but physically cannot. The sweet spot is a player who has both, or at least a strong Determination floor that keeps the engine running even when the tank is low.

The AI reads Determination when evaluating a player's late-match contributions, their response to conceding, and their willingness to engage in physical duels under fatigue. It also softens the negative effects of a hostile away atmosphere and a manager's tactical frustration.

A common misconception is that Determination replaces Work Rate or Concentration. It does not. A player can have a 18 in Determination and still lose focus in a 1v1 (low Concentration) or simply not make the run (low Work Rate). Determination is the 'keep going' factor, not the 'do the right thing' factor.

Practical advice: when building a squad, do not ignore this rating for your defensive line and your box-to-box midfielders. A 15-Determination centre-back who is otherwise average will outperform a 10-Determination one who is a point higher in every other box, simply because he will still be in the game when it matters most. For wingers and full-backs, a Determination of 14 or above is the difference between a player who contributes in the final fifteen minutes and one who becomes a spectator.
